Choose your accommodation wisely…

July 24th, 2013 by Peter MacLaren

VermontWhile West Hill House B&B is the #1 rated B&B in the Mad River Valley on Trip Advisor at the time this blog is published, we know you have other excellent choices when you come to visit the beautiful State of Vermont. However be sure you choose wisely, as not all accommodation meets the safety and regulatory standards set by the State.

For your protection, West Hill House B&B is licensed and annually inspected for Lodging and as a Restaurant by the Vermont Dept. of Health, it is approved by the Vermont Division of Fire Safety, all fire extinguishers are serviced annually, all smoke and heat detectors are tested annually, and it carries commercial liability insurance.

The B&B is licensed for the sale of alcohol by the Vermont Dept. of Liquor Control. It is registered with the Vermont Dept. of Taxes and remits the applicable Rooms & Meals, Alcohol and Sales taxes that are included in the bill you pay us when you check out.

When you book your accommodation, do make sure you are going to be staying somewhere that is State licensed and inspected. Ask before you book, and when you are there you should see all the relevant certificates on display:

  • Lodging license
  • Restaurant license (if meals are served)
  • State tax IDs for Rooms & Meals and general Sales taxes
  • Liquor license (if alcohol is served)
  • Current fire extinguisher test tags on each unit
  • Current inspection certificate on the fire alarm panel

and the certificate of insurance should be available for your inspection.

You can check the list of all State licensed accommodation (and restaurants) in Vermont. If it’s not there, it’s not licensed.

West Hill House joins Select Registry

April 20th, 2009 by Peter MacLaren

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WEST HILL HOUSE JOINS PRESTIGIOUS INNKEEPING ASSOCIATION

The West Hill House, located in Warren, VT, was recently honored by admittance into Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America, the premier innkeeping association in the United States and Canada. Out of the thousands of inns in North America, only an elite few will be invited to join Select Registry this year. The West Hill House joins more than 400 other exceptional properties that are already members of the Association.

Select Registry Founded in 1972 as the Independent Innkeepers’ Association by Norman Simpson, “the Father of Country Inn travel in America,” Select Registry is an offshoot of Simpson’s popular and pioneering book, Country Inns and Back Roads. The name and logo of the organization were changed several years ago to reflect the group’s approach to marketing its selective and distinguished member properties. Originally established in the Berkshire area of New England, the nonprofit organization is now headquartered in historic Marshall, Michigan. Member inns must meet the rigorous standards of a Quality Assurance program, and represent the most prestigious establishments of their type.

A marketing association, Select Registry partners with other brands and organizations—such as BMW, Karen Brown’s Guides, DiRoNA, UK Tour Operator Select Vacations, PhoCusWright, Ontario’s Finest Inns and the American Heart Association to name a few—to promote its members to target audiences. Its celebrated guidebook—now in its 20th Edition—is distributed each year to nearly 400,000 guests throughout North America. The organization also maintains a critically-acclaimed website, supervises gift certificate and loyalty programs, and organizes promotions for its members, including last year’s inaugural “Inn-credible Breakfast Cook-off,” a breakfast recipe culinary competition that produced nearly 30 million media impressions.

“The West Hill House exemplifies the high quality and service championed by this Association,” says Select Registry Membership Director Carol Riggs. “Select Registry assures the traveler that each of its inns is regularly inspected—anonymously and with an overnight inspection that measures the quality of hospitality, as well as the physical plant. Our members share a high standard of excellence, and each of our country inns, luxury B&Bs, and unique small hotels has its own distinctive character.”

The owners of the West Hill House are Peter and Susan MacLaren who invite guests to their historic 1850’s home in the Mad River Valley to enjoy four glorious seasons for romance, relaxation and recreation. The B&B is a great choice as a quiet, comfortable central location for a multi-day visit to all the scenery, attractions and activities of central Vermont. It is also a great choice for weddings and receptions up to 80 guests, business retreats and family reunions.

“Membership of Select Registry was a goal we set for ourselves three years ago when we purchased West Hill House”, said the MacLarens. “It is gratifying that, by listening to feedback from our guests and continuing to examine and improve all aspects of how we run the B&B, we have now been admitted to this select group of North American properties.”

West Hill House is located on a quiet country road nestled in a hillside forest, surrounded by its gorgeous perennial gardens. It is just one mile from Sugarbush skiing and golf and seven miles from the Mad River Glen ski area. The B&B is in the midst of the Vermont countryside, yet just minutes from the shops, artisans and marvelous restaurants of Warren and Waitsfield, Vermont. The B&B offers 8 unique non-smoking guest rooms all with fireplaces, air conditioning, direct dial phones, WiFi, cable TVs, quality amenities and all with private ensuite bathrooms featuring Jacuzzis and/or steam showers.

In 2008 West Hill House was once again delighted to receive from BedandBreakfast.com a “Best B&B Award” in the New England Region for the 2nd consecutive year – the only B&B in Vermont recognized by this Award each year.

To find out more about the West Hill House, call 1-800-209-1049 (1-800-898-1427 from Canada) or visit it on the web atwww.westhillbb.com. Standing Out in a Crowded Industry

According to recent surveys, country inns, small hotels and B&Bs are more popular than ever. One online bed and breakfast web site identifies over 27,000 such properties in the U.S. and Canada. Reports have surfaced—including a recent New York Times article—that the industry has developed problems with quality control, pricing, and misrepresentation. “The field is becoming saturated,” states Riggs, “which makes being selected for this prestigious organization so important to our members. It sets the Inn apart in the public’s mind. Our standards are very high for member inns, making for outstanding travel experiences for the general public.”

West Hill House is focussed on protecting the beautiful Vermont environment, and it was designated in November 2008 as Green Hotel by the Vermont Environmental & Regulatory Assistance Program. Peter & Susan were presentedwith a plaque recognizing this status by Governor Jim Douglas in April 2009.

For travellers planning a more extensive trip, we can personally recommend the following B&Bs in other areas:

  • If you are visting Stratford, Ontario – perhaps for the annual theater season – we recommend The Duggan Place run by Laura and Tony. We had a very enjoyable time in their renovated Victorian home.
  • Visitors to the Lake Winnipesaukee region of NH will enjoy a stay with Pat and  Mike at the Lighthouse Inn B&B  on the north west shore near Meredith and Weirs Beach. We had a delightful stay there in 2005.
  • A Place In Time B&B owners Jon and Mary Kaye offer friendly hospitality in a Historical Landmark B&B in the heart of Texas Hill Country. It offers convenient access to numerous activities including antiquing, wine tours and much more. Susan enjoyed Texas hospitality while enjoying a girlfriends’ weekend there.
  • Lookout Point Lakeside Inn is located in Hot Springs, Arkansas overlooking a tranquil bay of beautiful Lake Hamilton. We were guests there following a busy conference and greatly appreciated the quiet beauty of the gardens. Hosts Kristie and Ray offer warm hospitality and excellent breakfasts.
  • Riverbend Inn is one of New Hampshire’s most romantic Bed and Breakfasts. It is located in Chocorua, about 17 miles south of North Conway. It combines the hospitality and charm of a country inn with a gorgeous location among the trees on the banks of a river. We really enjoyed staying with Jerry and Craig and we are sure you will too.
  • If you plan to be the Boston or Cambridge MA area the Wellesley Bed & Breakfaston the outskirts is in the delightful town of the same name, with a train connection to town. The B&B promotes earth and cultural conscientiousness, is an allergen-free home and they are very accommodating of your dietary, life-style and medical needs.
  • And for the many of our guests who have asked us for more information about Scotland, here is a good place to start. Also we recently came across this beautiful slideshow of Scottish Castles. The slide show is accompanied by two songs by Scottish singer Moira Kerr.
