Discover the Best Ski Resorts in Vermont

Our charming state is known for its snowy winters—the perfect place to hit the slopes, strap on the snowshoes, and curl up by the fire. Thankfully, two of the best ski resorts in Vermont are right near our B&B: Sugarbush Resort and Mad River Glen. The first offers a more traditional skiing and snowboarding experience, while the latter is one of the only skier-owned cooperatives left in the country. Both are excellent destinations for a beautiful winter’s day out on the mountain in the crisp, fresh air.

The ski season generally begins around Thanksgiving and heads on through the winter while the snowy conditions hold up.

Sugarbush is consistently rated as one of the best ski resorts in Vermont—encompassing three terrain parks spanning 4,000 acres of wilderness over two mountains, Mount Ellen and Lincoln Peak. It’s also one of the largest ski resorts in New England, with 111 ski trails, 16 lifts, and a summit elevation of more than 4,000 feet.

Mad River Glen is a unique ski resort that gives visitors a sense of the past. Unlike many other ski resorts in the US, it only allows skiing and does not permit snowboarding. The resort is also known for operating a single occupancy chair lift, which is becoming increasingly rare in the industry. Whichever ski resort in Vermont you choose to experience, our cozy bed and breakfast is the ultimate place to return to after a chilly day on the slopes.

West Hill House B&B, a Select Registry property, offers a welcoming space where relaxation comes easy! Our nine unique rooms have a distinct layout and beautiful details with private baths (many with jetted tubs), gas fireplaces, and stunning nature views. You’ll be sure to get a restful night’s sleep before heading out to the slopes at the best ski resorts in Vermont. We tend to fill up early for ski season, so plan ahead and book your room today!

Two Best Ski Resorts in Vermont near our B&B

Now that you know where to stay for your winter getaway, we’ll fill you in on the two ski resorts in Vermont near our B&B. Sugarbush Ski Resort is less than five minutes from our front door (we offer a daily shuttle), and Mad River Glen is just about 15 minutes away.

Here are a few facts and figures about two of the best ski resorts in Vermont:

Sugarbush Ski Resort:

  1. Sugarbush includes two mountain peaks—Mount Ellen and Lincoln Peak. Ski magazine readers ranked Sugarbush as one of the best ski resorts in the east in 2021.
  2. Lincoln Peak’s classic New England-style trails lead to the village, which features ski schools and various places to eat during the day.
  3. Mount Ellen is known for its excellent slopes and terrain. The skiing style here is casual and relaxed. Still, there are also some challenging features to enjoy, such as Vermont’s highest chairlift, a top-notch terrain park, and the prestigious Green Mountain Valley School, home to an elite ski racing academy.
  4. After a thrilling day of skiing, Sugarbush Resort provides a range of dining and beverage options. You’ll find a great selection of locally brewed ales, hearty pub fare, and the perfect aprés ski atmosphere at Rumble’s Bistro & Bar. There are a few fast-casual options, too, during the day at Sugar Shack and the Lunch Box food truck.
  5. Remember that Sugarbush isn’t just one of the best ski resorts in Vermont for wintertime fun, but it also offers tremendous warm-weather activities. If you plan to visit in the spring and summer, you’ll find fantastic golfing, disc golf, ziplining, mountain biking, tennis, and more. For more information on the warmer season activities at Sugarbush, please read our blog here.

Mad River Glen:

  1. Mad River Glen might not offer all of the amenities as some other ski resorts in Vermont, but its intimate scale caters to those yearning for the ski slopes of yore. On even its busiest days, Mad River Glen doesn’t feel crowded, even though the resort offers some of the most challenging terrain in New England. With its four chair lifts, you’ll often feel like you have the mountain all to yourself on weekdays.
  2. Part of that intimate feeling comes from Mad River Glen being one of the last cooperatively owned, non-commercial, family-friendly resorts in America. More than 1,800 skiers own a share in the resort.
  3. Mad River Glen offers trails and terrain for all skill levels—from beginner runs to top-to-bottom black-diamond routes for the most experienced thrill-seekers. Unfortunately for some, this is one of the ski resorts in Vermont where snowboarding is not permitted.
  4. One thing you can miss at this ski resort is checking out the last operating single-chair lift (Lift 1) in the United States. There are also three double-chair lifts.
  5. Mad River Glen is one of Vermont’s almost completely natural ski resorts with snowmaking only in the base areas and receives 250 inches of annual snowfall.
