12 Reasons to Enjoy Vermont Skiing Near Our Vermont B&B

There’s no shortage of places to ski in Vermont: Stratton Mountain, Stowe Mountain, Mount Snow, Jay Peak, Killington, Okemo Mountain, and many others can be reached within a few hours, depending on the weather. We’ll focus on Mad River Glen and Sugarbush since they’re the closest to our Bed and Breakfast in Vermont.

Mad River Glen is One of the Best Places to Ski in Vermont

Here are some reasons we love this little gem, whose opening day is set for December 13, and suggest it to our Vermont B&B guests:

1. Mad River Glen isn’t as big or as loaded with amenities as some of the other Vermont ski resorts, but its intimate scale is a plus for many skiers. On even its busiest days, Mad River Glen just doesn’t feel crowded, even though the resort offers some of the most challenging terrain in New England. With its four chair lifts, you’ll often feel as though you have the mountain all to yourself.
2. Part of that intimate feeling comes from the fact that Mad River Glen is one of the last cooperatively owned, non-commercial, family-friendly resorts in America. More than 1,800 skiers own a share in the resort.
3. With a vertical drop of just over 2,000 feet, Mad River Glen offers trails and terrain for expert skiers as well as beginners. Thrill-seekers will love the top-to-bottom black-diamond runs.
4. Mad River Glen offers the last single chair lift (Lift 1) in the United States. (Along with three double chair lifts.) Get yourself a selfie you can’t get anywhere else in America!
5. Mad River Glen is a completely natural-snow skiing site, with 250 inches of annual snowfall. No snowmaking!
6. No snowboarding at Mad River Glen, either! That means you can enjoy skiing along the mountain’s natural cuts and contours without interference or flattened snow.

Vermont Skiing at Sugarbush Resort

This Ski resort, located right here in the town of Warren, by contrast with Mad River Glen, is one of New England’s largest ski resorts, corporately owned, with more than twice as many trails (111 to 51). Some reasons we like sending out Vermont B&B guests here include:

1. Sugarbush encompasses two mountains: Mount Ellen and Lincoln Peak. Mount Ellen, according to Ski magazine in its winter 2020 preview, is, at 2,600 feet, a “rough and tumble, no-frills, max-vert experience.” Lincoln Peak encompasses, among several smaller peaks, Castlerock, an expert-only slope, which is the only Sugarbush area that does not use snowmaking. It’s also where most Sugarbush resort amenities are located.
2. Beginner or intermediate skier? Warrenmiller.com offers suggestions for the best lifts runs for each experience level on each mountain: On Lincoln Peak, beginners and intermediates are urged to try the Gatehouse Express chair for “dreamy groomers.” On Mount Ellen, tree skiers are urged to try the Inverness chair for “the very literally named Semi-Tough Trees.”
3. Expert skier? Lincoln Peakers are advised by Warrenmiller.com to take the Castlerock chair to the Rumble, Lift Line and Middle Earth runs, while on Mount Ellen, experts are advised to try the Blackdiamond Rush, EIS, Exterminator and Bravo runs among other of “Vermont’s gnarliest offerings.”
4. The food-and-drink scene at Sugarbush is at least as robust as the skiing and snowboarding, with a number of great restaurants, pubs and cafeterias. The craft-beer scene, in particular, is burgeoning, and sometimes people leave their skis behind and come to Sugarbush simply to congregate at Castlerock Pub, Rumble’s Bistro & Bar or Walt’s at the Glen House, among other see-and-be-seen venues. (Note that at least initially this season, inside dining will be restricted and require reservations.)
5. Keep in mind that Sugarbush is a year-round resort, and make plans to visit in the spring and summer for golf, disc golf, ziplining, mountain biking, tennis and more. Here are our suggestions for making the most of Sugarbush’s snow-free months.
