The Best Scenic Drives in the Mad River Valley to Explore Vermont in October

There are ten federally designated scenic byways that traverse the Green Mountain State, winding through mountains and converging in valleys. These colorful routes link historic downtowns and picturesque farms. Vermont’s scenic byways vary from 14 miles to 400 miles and can be explored by car, motorcycle, or bicycle.

Depending on your interests, there are farms, covered bridges, and waterfalls along these routes.   1. Vermont’s Scenic Route 100: Running right through Warren is the Green Mountain Byway, also known as the Scenic Route 100 byway. This 146-mile route runs north-south along the eastern edge of the Green Mountains. Along the way, there are plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy, so be prepared for a long day if you plan to experience one of Vermont’s incredible scenic drives.
  2. Mad River Scenic Byway: This 36-mile scenic drive is part of Route 100 and 100b and is one of the best things to do in Vermont in October. The Mad River Valley has some of the most striking fall foliage in the world, and you can see some of the best from the warmth of your own car.
  3. Vermont Covered Bridge Scenic Drive: These historic and picturesque landmarks dot the old highways and country roads in Vermont. There are still about 100 authentic covered here, and each has its own style, story, and unique architecture.
