See the Waitsfield Covered Bridge in Vermont This Fall

In Vermont, we value our connection to the past, and one way that our state has honored our roots is by preserving our historical landmarks. One of those beautiful places is the Waitsfield Covered Bridge, one of about a hundred of these famed structures that pepper our rural highways and scenic byways. It’s such a treat to come across a covered bridge on your Vermont road trip! Many of which you’ll still drive under, a particularly unique experience to this region.

Also sometimes referred to as the Great Eddy Bridge, the Waitsfield Covered Bridge is a 105-foot wooden structure constructed as a single-span Burr truss, spanning the Mad River, and completed in 1833, making it one of the oldest examples of these architectural gems. It holds the title of being the longest single-span bridge in the state.

This historic covered bridge is just off the Scenic Vermont Route 100, a popular drive to see some of the most beautiful fall foliage in the Mad River Valley. For those heading to Vermont for a few days to explore, our romantic bed and breakfast is a fantastic destination. We’re located in the cozy village of Warren (also home to its own picturesque covered bridge), about ten minutes from Waitsfield, VT. If you’re looking for a quiet location for your next vacation, West Hill House B&B is the best place to stay. Book your lodging in Vermont today!

Waitsfield Covered Bridge & More Vermont Covered Bridges to Tour this Fall

While the Waitsfield Covered Bridge is a prime example of these historic structures, there’s plenty more to add to your itinerary. With more than 100 bridges across the state, you’ll likely encounter a few along the way.

The bridge pictured above is the Warren Bridge, also known as the Lincoln Gap Covered Bridge, spanning the Mad River. If you choose our romantic bed and breakfast as your homebase, you’ll see this structure as you navigate our charming small town during your stay.

Follow this loop from our bed and breakfast, which includes eight lovely examples of our Vermont Covered Bridges

  1. If you continue north on Vermont Route 100, you’ll be on your way to the Waitsfield Covered Bridge, only 12 minutes from our Inn.
  2. Continue through Waitsfield, and you’ll come across the 1872 Pine Brook Covered Bridge, which spans Pine Brook, a tributary of the Mad River.
  3. Next, you’ll head to Moretown and cut southwest on Moretown Mountain Road, which turns into Cox Brook Road, and you’ll discover the Upper Cox Bridge, a wooden Queen post truss bridge built in 1872. It is one of three covered bridges on Cox Brook Road.
  4. The following two bridges are next on this road: the Lower Cox and Northfield Falls Covered Bridge.
  5. Then, you can take a slight detour off the main road to see the Slaughterhouse Covered Bridge.
  6. Next up, the Stony Brook Covered Bridge, also known as the Moseley Covered Bridge, was built in 1899 and spans Stony Brook in Northfield. It is one of two remaining King post truss-covered bridges in the state. This will be just a quick detour off the main route, and then you’ll head back to Warren.
  7. Lastly, you can add the closest bridge to our B&B to your list, the Warren Covered Bridge. You’ll notice a sign that says Lincoln Gap, so it’s often referred to as this name as well. This loop scenic drive will take you about an hour and a half, but you might as well extend your time and stop off for lunch and some shopping in the charming small towns along the way.

The Vermont Covered Bridge Society is an excellent resource for learning more about Vermont’s bridges. And feel free to ask your innkeepers for directions and tips!
