Stunning Waterfalls in Vermont to Add to Your Itinerary
There’s just something magical about the cascading waters of the waterfalls in Vermont—the sound, the crisp spray, and the beautiful emerald-green rivers navigating the mountains of the Mad River Valley. A handful of waterfalls in central Vermont are within driving distance for the perfect road trip to take in these natural gems. You’ll also get to view cols along the way, which is another word for a pass between two summits—just another stunning feature that makes our landscape unique.
One of the closest to our bed and breakfast in Vermont is Warren Falls. While we don’t recommend this stop during the winter or muddy season when the ground begins to thaw—during the summer and fall, this is a lovely place to pop off the road and take a peak at the beautiful series of cascading pools and a favorite swimming hole for locals and visitors. Best to stop there right after breakfast or just before dinner as it is often over-crowded during the day. This will just be the beginning of your romantic getaway road trip to the nearby waterfalls in Vermont.
A key component of our hospitality at West Hill House B&B is our knowledge of the area, which we are more than happy to share with our guests! As longtime innkeepers, Peter and Susan are experts in the best things to do in Warren and the surrounding small towns and winding back roads. At the inn, you’ll find maps and detailed itineraries for culinary tours, historic covered bridges, the best hikes, and waterfalls in Vermont. Visit these Waterfalls in Vermont During Your Romantic Getaways
Waterfalls set a romantic backdrop, especially in the fall, as the bright leaves surround these natural cascades. The Mad River Valley in Vermont is home to some beautiful examples popular among locals and visitors alike, and we’ve put together an easy itinerary for you to follow.
Here are four waterfalls in Vermont to see during your stay:
- Warren Falls: Just six minutes down Route 100, this falls is a popular stop in the warmer months. The parking can be tricky, so if the lot is full, we recommend skipping this stop, as parking along the road is prohibited. The falls can be reached by a short trail. This waterfall stands out for the deep pools and is a favorite summer swimming hole – best visited right after breakfast or just before dinner to avoid the crowds.
- Moss Glen Falls: The Granville Gulf Reservation covers 1,171 acres and is part of the scenic drive along Route 100. Moss Glen Falls is a landmark within this nature area, an 80-foot drop to the gulf floor where Deer Hollow Brook joins Alder Meadow Brook.
- Texas Falls: Located within the Green Mountain National Forest, Texas Falls is a lovely example of a series of cascading falls of clear mountain water. If you want to stretch your legs, the Texas Falls Nature Trail is an easy hike through a mature forest of beech, cherry, and birch trees, with hemlocks here and there.
- Middlebury Falls: Perhaps one of the most impressive urban waterfalls in Vermont, this wide 18-foot block-style falls. A great place to view the falls is from the pedestrian bridge over Otter Creek. Head across the bridge to Riverfront Park, and you’ll have another excellent angle to view the falls.
A Few Other Stops to Add to Your Itinerary:
As you head out on your road trip to the nearby waterfalls in the area, there are a few other great places for lunch, picnic supplies, or wine tasting:
- Warren Store: Our charming village store is the perfect place to stop for a latte on the road, pack a picnic, or buy locally-made treats.
- Downtown Middlebury: Known as one of the most charming small towns in Vermont, make time to explore the quaint streets lined with locally owned boutiques and adorable cafes and stroll the romantic campus of Middlebury College.
- Lincoln Peak Vineyard: Located in New Haven, north of Middlebury, this winery is known for producing fine wines grown and made in Vermont. The vineyard offers a welcoming tasting room experience for flights, cheese and charcuterie boards, and live music every Friday.
