Explore on Two Wheels: Vermont Bike Trails

The Green Mountain State has long been bicycle-friendly, with a lovely selection of Vermont bike trails to discover. Exploring curated routes or traveling from village to village is an excellent way to venture out on two wheels. This is particularly true for the Mad River Valley region, which is bookended between two renowned mountain ski resorts, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen.

Part of the fun, of course, of heading out on these Vermont bike trails are the stops along the way. As you rush down a forested backroad or lightly traveled byway, the scenery feels untouched in our picturesque region; you may quickly notice that no billboards for advertising are allowed across the state! You may ride up around a bend, only to discover a classic barn or dairy farm open for produce or cheese tastings, or if wine tasting is more your speed, you’ll find vineyards too.

The charming small towns of Waistfield and Warren, VT, are centrally located to all of the best things to do in the Mad River Valley. With our Vermont B&B as your home base, you’ll have the perfect place to set out on adventures and the most personable guides, Innkeepers Peter and Susan, to direct you on your travels. Our Handsome Barn has extra room for your gear and even space for repairs if your bike needs them. We hope to host you on your next cycling adventure in Vermont; book your lodging today!

Cycling Adventure: The Best Vermont Bike Trails

Vermont is well-known for its vibrant cycling culture, attracting both locals and visitors who seek to explore its scenic beauty on two wheels. The state’s commitment to outdoor recreation, combined with its picturesque landscape, creates an ideal environment for cyclists. Whether you’re interested in road biking or mountain biking, there are Vermont bike trails for everyone!

  1. Mad River Riders Network: Located in the Mad River Valley, this network of trails is a favorite among mountain bikers. The Mad River Riders maintain over 60 miles of trails, ranging from smooth, flowy singletracks to technical, challenging routes.
  2. LAMB Bike Route: This acronym stands for the four gaps: Lincoln, Appalachian, Middlebury, and Brandon. This challenging 100-mile loop offers a grueling yet rewarding ride, featuring steep climbs, thrilling descents, and breathtaking views of Vermont’s Green Mountains.
  3. Green Mountain Gravel Growler: This 250-mile route is a favorite for gravel cycling enthusiasts. It passes through the heart of Vermont’s craft beer country and connects some of the best breweries in the state. The route combines a love of cycling with Vermont’s rich brewing culture. It covers a mix of gravel roads, scenic byways, and challenging terrain, making it a favorite for adventure seekers.
  4. Lamoille Valley Rail Trail: Spanning 93 miles, this multi-use trail is one of the most popular in Vermont. It offers a relatively flat and easy ride, perfect for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. The trail runs through some of Vermont’s most stunning landscapes, including forests, farmlands, and small towns, providing riders with a quintessential Vermont experience.
  5. Island Line Trail: It’s about an hour-long car ride to Burlington from our B&B, but this is one of the Vermont bike trails that you’ll never forget gliding along! This 14-mile trail runs along the shores of Lake Champlain, offering cyclists breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, including the iconic Colchester Causeway, a narrow, three-mile stretch that extends directly into the lake, creating the sensation of riding on water.

Vermont’s cycling community is supportive and active, with numerous events, races, and group rides taking place throughout the year. Local groups are dedicated to maintaining and developing its trails, ensuring that cyclists always have new and exciting routes to explore. Additionally, Vermont’s bike-friendly towns and accommodations make it easy for visitors to find places to stay, eat, and rest after a day on the trails.
