Whether you’re looking for a challenging climb, a leisurely stroll, or something in between, there’s a route for every experience level of outdoor enthusiasts to explore in the Mad River Valley.

Here are the best hikes in Vermont near our Waitsfield Inn:

  1. Mad River Path: For an easy walk that provides beautiful views of the Mad River Valley. It’s an excellent option for those looking for a relaxed day outdoors with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fall scenery.
  2. Blueberry Lake Trails: The trails around Blueberry Lake offer a variety of options for hikers of all levels. The reflection of the fall colors on the lake is a highlight of this area, making it a great spot for a hike on a crisp day. This is also a popular spot for mountain biking.
  3. Long Trail to Mount Abraham: The most popular hike to a summit on the Long Trail is Mount Abraham. It is an exhilarating trek to one of the most impressive locations in New England. You begin by driving to Lincoln Gap, just over 5 minutes from the B&B. As the gap is at about 2500 ft, you are already more than halfway to the top! The trail consists of a combination of high mountain forest and rocky terrain.
  4. Long Trail to Sunset Rock: Shorter than the hike above, this route also begins at Lincoln Gap and can end at one of the most jaw-dropping scenic vistas in the state, known as Sunset Rock
  5. Molly Stark’s Balcony: From this impressive hike, you’ll see a great view of Camel’s Hump and other mountain ranges. This is a 2.6-mile hike with more than 500 feet of elevation gain.
  6. Burnt Mountain: This is another one of the ambitious hikes in Vermont for a steep 5.2-mile round-trip trek. The route joins the Long Trail 2.5 miles in and takes you by one of the largest glacial potholes in New England.
  7. Camel’s Hump: One of Vermont’s highest peaks, Camel’s Hump offers challenging trails with rewarding views from the summit. The hike is steep, but the panoramic views of the fall foliage from the top are well worth the effort.
