Vermont Cross-Country Skiing Near Our Bed and Breakfast

The crisp white snow, sunshine filtering through the frosty trees, and a beautiful quiet except for birds and a breeze, this is Vermont cross-country skiing at its best. Vermont, also known as the Green Mountain State, offers year-round outdoor recreation and is an ideal place for a winter getaway. Thousands of eager skiers and snowboarders hit the nearby ski resorts. But one of our favorite ways to explore this wonderland is on the Vermont cross-country skiing trails.

Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is a bit more accessible and can be mastered much more quickly. It’s a pastime that all ages can enjoy. Traditional Nordic skiing uses narrow skis that glide over groomed trails, whereas backcountry skiing uses a broader blade to navigate less-traveled routes in more remote areas. There are many options for all skill levels and abilities, with three great trail systems in particular not far from our Vermont Bed and Breakfast!

When you stay at West Hill House B&B, you place yourself at the center of some of the best Vermont cross-country skiing in the Mad River Valley. Our quiet nine-acre property gives you easy access to local trails and peaceful winter scenery. If you bring your own gear, you can even ski right from the door. A segment of the well-known Catamount Trail passes directly behind the B&B, giving you a chance to glide onto a route that stretches across the entire state. Start planning today and book your room today!

The Best Places for Vermont Cross-Country Skiing

As a guest at our cozy bed and breakfast, you’ll be in the ideal place to explore the nearby Vermont cross-country skiing trails. In fact, if you have your own gear, you could very well explore our beautiful nine-acre property during your time, and a segment of the well-known Catamount Trail runs right behind our B&B. Read on to find out more!

Blueberry Lake Cross Country Center:

Located under ten minutes from our B&B, this Vermont cross-country skiing center offers 11 trails with more than 2o miles ranging from easy to expert. Most of these groomed trails are wooded, but some open up into expansive meadows with breathtaking views. You’ll find ski and snowshoe rentals here, so you don’t need to pack your gear. Blueberry Lake also welcomes fat tire bikes if you’re up to trying your hand at mountain biking in the snow!

Ole’s Cross Country Center:

Another favorite for Vermont cross-country skiing is just about five miles from our Inn. Ole’s offers 12 trails varying in length and difficulty—many of the trails connect, so you can choose your own adventure and extend your time if you’ve got the energy. Visit the ski and snowshoe center here for rentals—all gear is on a first-come, first-served basis, but they rarely run out.

The Catamount Trail

While only the most adventurous and advanced skiers attempt to cover the length of Vermont on skis, this 300-mile trail is broken up into segments across the state for some fantastic backcountry skiing. Lucky for us, there’s a lovely 11-mile portion of the route directly behind our B&B, leading to the Sugarbush Golf Course. If you’re in the mood for a leisurely adventure, cut your own trail at the course and stay close by.

If you’re curious about purchasing cross-country skis or other snow gear, head to our local store Alpine Options. The knowledgeable staff can give you more tips and tricks to best explore the beautiful Vermont countryside.
