The Best Places for Kayaking in Vermont

While the very beginnings of spring are just appearing in the Mad River Valley, before we know it, the heat of summer will be upon us, and we’ll be ready to hit the water. Kayaking in Vermont is such a lovely pastime, and there are beautiful placid lakes and rolling rivers to explore via paddle. Whether you’re hoping to head out on your own or book an excursion with a local touring group, exploring Vermont from the water is a unique vantage point and a relaxing way to take in the beauty of the Green Mountain State.

One of the easiest ways to enjoy a day kayaking in Vermont is with a tour led by Clearwater Sports. These talented guides offer one of the best kayaking tours in the Mad River Valley. Depending on water conditions, it will either be on the Mad River or the nearby Winooski River that the Mad River flows into. Both rivers are smooth, slow-flowing, and easy to navigate, with plenty of scenery to enjoy along the way. Guided tours occur daily, leaving at 10:30 am and returning at approximately 3:30 pm.

Even better, as a guest at our Vermont Bed and Breakfast, we’re more than happy to arrange these guided tours for you—just let us know when you make your reservation, and we can set it all up. We’ll take care of the transportation and gear; all you have to do is come prepared to hit the water. Our B&B is right in the heart of the Mad River Valley, set back on our stunning nine-acre garden grounds for a perfect peaceful retreat. Inside, our nine guest rooms are all unique and beautifully appointed with comfortable beds, lovely en suite bathrooms, and everything you need for a restful stay. Book your room today!

The Best Kayaking in Vermont & More Outdoor Adventures

The pristine waterways and clear lakes draw water lovers to Vermont year-round, but summer is the best time to take advantage of it instead of just taking in its beauty from the shorelines. The Mad River is 36 miles long and weaves through Warren, Waitsfield, and Moretown villages, with swimming holes, fishing spots, historic covered bridges, and rapids along the way. You’ll also find some calm lakes for stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing nearby.

Here are the best places for kayaking in Vermont near our bed and breakfast:

  1. Kayaking the Mad River & Winooski River: The ultimate way to experience a day of tubing or kayaking in Vermont is with Clearwater Sports. They offer guided tours on these two rivers, depending on the conditions. When the snow is melting in the spring, these rivers can be quite tricky to navigate with the rushing waters. These times are best left to the experts.
  2. SUP at Blueberry Lake: This lovely lake right near Warren and our bed and breakfast is known for its flat water, making it the ideal spot for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, and gentle kayaking in Vermont. Clearwater Sports also offers a SUP yoga class on the lake for the truly balanced. This area also has fantastic trails, so it’s always fun to do a little bit of both during your stay.
  3. Canoeing the Waterbury Reservoir: As Vermont’s ninth largest body of water, beginner kayakers and canoers flock to these calm waters for an afternoon in the sun. The Waterbury Reservoir offers boat rentals, a swimming beach, fishing platforms, and a nature trail.
  4. Lake Dunmore at Branbury State Park: This state park is located on the eastern shore of Lake Dunmore in Salisbury, VT. It may be a bit of a trek from our bed and breakfast in Warren, but it’s a beautiful scenic drive worth your time. Many hiking trails nearby lead to stunning panoramic vistas, waterfalls, caves, mountain lakes, and streams. You can also find mountain biking trails in the area. For those interested in fishing and boating, Lake Dunmore is a great option and offers rentals for canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and pedal boats at the park.

As a guest at our Vermont bed and breakfast, we’re happy to offer our guests concierge services—this may even include transportation to nearby hiking trails and meeting up with your guides with Clearwater Sports. When you make your reservation, feel free to call us, and we can answer any questions you may have.
