There’s just something magical about the cascading waters of the waterfalls in Vermont. The sound, the crisp spray, and the beautiful emerald-green rivers navigating the mountains of the Mad River Valley. A handful of waterfalls in central Vermont are within driving distance for the perfect road trip to take in these natural, and sometimes hidden, gems. You’ll also get to view cols along the way, which is another word for a pass between two summits, just another stunning feature that makes our landscape unique.
One of the closest to our Bed and Breakfast in Vermont is Warren Falls. While we don’t recommend stopping during the winter or muddy season, during the warmer months, this is a lovely place to pull off the road to take a peek at the beautiful series of cascading pools, and it’s a favorite swimming hole for locals and visitors. Best to stop there right after breakfast or just before dinner, as it is often overcrowded during the day. Heading out to view these natural treasures is just one of the best things to do in Vermont on a romantic getaway.
Before you start filling your itinerary, you’ll want to secure your lodging in the Mad River Valley. Visit these Waterfalls in Vermont: Perfect for Romantic Getaways
Waterfalls create a romantic backdrop, any time of year. In the spring and summer, the waters are at their strongest, creating the most dramatic cascades. During the autumn, the stunning fall foliage of Vermont only highlights the beauty of the falls, framing the water in golden, red, and orange hues. Whereas winter brings a whole new landscape, frozen falls, and winter wonderland scenes.
The Mad River Valley in Vermont is home to some beautiful examples popular among locals and visitors alike, and we’ve put together an easy itinerary for you to follow. Here’s the ultimate list of waterfalls in Vermont to see during your stay or along your scenic drives in or out of town:
- Warren Falls is just six minutes down Route 100 from our B&B. This falls is a popular stop in the warmer months. The parking can be tricky, so if the lot is full, we recommend skipping this stop, as parking along the road is prohibited. The falls can be reached by a short trail. This waterfall stands out for the deep pools and is a favorite summer swimming hole, best visited right after breakfast or just before dinner to avoid the crowds.
- The Granville Gulf Reservation covers 1,171 acres and is part of the scenic drive along Route 100. Moss Glen Falls is a landmark within this nature area, an 80-foot drop to the gulf floor where Deer Hollow Brook joins Alder Meadow Brook.
- Located within the Green Mountain National Forest, Texas Falls is a lovely series of cascading falls of clear mountain water. If you want to stretch your legs, the Texas Falls Nature Trail is an easy hike through a mature forest of beech, cherry, and birch trees, with hemlocks here and there.
- Perhaps one of the most impressive urban waterfalls in Vermont, Middlebury Falls is a wide 18-foot block-style falls. A great place to view the falls is from the pedestrian bridge over Otter Creek. Head across the bridge to Riverfront Park, and you’ll have another excellent angle to view the falls. Take some time to explore Middlebury as well; it’s one of the most charming small towns in Vermont!
- Bartlett Falls, located about 35 minutes from our B&B on the New Haven River, is beautiful. During the summer months, it’s one of the most popular Vermont swimming holes, too.
- There’s a gentle looped hiking trail that leads to the Falls of Lana near Branbury State Park, offering you the perfect afternoon in the outdoors. This beautiful area is one of the best places to visit in Vermont!
- A little further away, up near Stowe, Vermont, you’ll find Bingham Falls. It cascades off steep gorge walls for a total of 40 feet into a beautiful green pool below. The area is also a protected wildlife corridor and a wonderful place to enjoy afternoon hikes.
- Thundering Brook Falls ranks as the 6th tallest of waterfalls in Vermont, tumbling for 140 feet down a steep and narrow gorge.
- A bit of a drive from our B&B, Lye Brook Falls, located in a stunning natural area, is one of the state’s tallest, at a towering 125 feet. It’s a fairly seasonal waterfall best seen in spring and fall. While it’s one of the best hikes in Vermont to get to these falls, the last part of the trail is uphill, so be ready for some elevation gain.
- Also, a bit further away, Hamilton Falls is another example that drops 125 impressive feet and is breathtaking. While it’s certainly worth visiting, it’s known to be one of the more dramatic and dangerous falls, so proceed with caution. These last two waterfalls in Vermont will likely be on your list if you’re coming up from the South, visiting from Massachusetts, or Upstate New York.
