Hike the Vermont Long Trail This Summer

There really is no shortage of exceptional hiking trails in Vermont, especially in the area of the Green Mountains that surround the Mad River Valley.  That said, there’s one trail that far outshines the rest, and it’s the Vermont Long Trail. As the name implies, the Vermont Long Trail is, well, long.  It actually runs the entire length of the state, and it has the added distinction of being the oldest long-distance trail of its kind in the country.

There are a variety of access points and segments to take along the Vermont Long Trail, so much so that you can enjoy an entirely new hiking experience each time you visit us at the West Hill House B&B.  If you’ve always wanted to explore this portion of the Long Trail, then this summer is your perfect opportunity.  Best yet, hiking is one of the many activities that can be enjoyed while still observing proper social distancing protocols!  This summer, treat yourself to some time in the Mad River Valley, and book a room at the West Hill House B&B.  You won’t regret a second of your time with us.

4 Great hikes on the Vermont Long Trail

The Vermont Long Trail is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the country. The trail follows the crest of the Green Mountains and crosses some of the highest peaks in Vermont as it passes above the stunning Mad River Valley. Only the most experienced hikers among us should attempt to hike the entire 272-mile length of the long trail (it takes 20 – 30 days on average!), but that doesn’t mean there are still plenty of day hikes to be enjoyed.  Many of the trail’s most scenic segments are located near our Inn, too.

Though the Vermont Long Trail extends for 272 miles north to south, there are another 166 miles of side trails that break off from the main trail. You can easily see just how endless the hiking possibilities around us can be! Here are 4 of our favorite side trails of the Vermont Long Trail:

  1. Mount Ellen is one of the 5 mountain peaks in Vermont that is over 4,000 feet tall. At the actual summit, you won’t find great views; it’s pretty wooded.  However, just a few steps away on the ridge and the open ski trails of Sugarbush resort, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Vermont’s Green Mountains, the Lake Champlain Valley, the Adirondacks, and even New Hampshire and Canada on blue-sky days. As with most peaks in the area, there are a few ways to get to Mount Ellen, and we’re happy to help you discover the best-suited trail for your experience level.
  2. To the north of us, you’ll find Camel’s Hump State Park, where there are a number of enjoyable hikes to take, including a portion of the Vermont Long Trail. Camel’s Hump is Vermont’s 3rd highest peak and is a uniquely-shaped peak in the Green Mountains, seen from a variety of different vantage points and other hiking trails. There are two main ways to get to Camel’s Hump, including the Monroe Trailhead and the Burrows Trail.
  3. The Sunset Ledge Trail is another great one accessed from Lincoln Gap Road. This time, you’ll head 1.3 miles south from Lincoln Gap Road. It’s a pretty easy trail, but well worth it, especially when the wildflowers are in bloom. At the end of the trail, you’ll enjoy west-facing views looking at the Champlain Valley, all the way to the high blue peaks of the distant Adirondacks.  At sunset, this spot is divine.
  4. The trail to Mount Abraham & Lincoln Peak is a popular one.  It features plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, and, of course, exceptional views.  This hike starts on Lincoln Gap Road and continues north along the southern ridge of Mount Abraham, another one of the peaks that rise to more than 4,000 feet. Once you reach the summit of Mount Abraham, you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys, mountain ranges, and Lake Champlain. From there, the journey to Lincoln Peak continues, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the Sugarbush Ski Resort.
